In this week鈥檚 column, I would like to talk about unnecessary things.

I recently took a trip to Round Rock to visit some friends and we were supposed to see 鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux.鈥 It didn鈥檛 end up happening because none of said friends wanted to spend full price to see what was being called one of the worst movies of the year. Understandable.

So, I returned to 足交视频 and resigned myself to waiting to see the sequel to 2019鈥檚 鈥淛oker鈥 until it inevitably came to MAX or some other streaming service.

I wanted to write this column on Francis Ford Coppola鈥檚 鈥淢egalopolis,鈥 but because the film only had one screening per-day for some reason, I resigned myself to seeing 鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux鈥 alone, which might be the worst way to see 鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux.鈥

I don鈥檛 believe there has been a better example of corporate greed and hubris than 鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux.鈥

In 2019, 鈥淛oker鈥 grossed over $1 billion in the box office on an estimated $55 million budget. It told a darkly realistic tale of mental illness and society鈥檚 most downtrodden, all set to a familiar backdrop of Batman鈥檚 very own Gotham City.

To put it lightly, we鈥檝e been through a lot in the time since 鈥淛oker鈥 was released; our own society has changed in significant ways, and our moviegoing habits will likely never return to pre-COVID levels. So, when faced with whether or not to make a sequel鈥攁n argument could have been made to cancel it鈥攖he corporate tools at Warner Bros. decided to make it a musical.

I don鈥檛 hate musicals; in fact, one of my biggest hyper fixations this year has been 鈥淓PIC,鈥 the musical based on Homer鈥檚 鈥淭he Odyssey.鈥

But, the musical bits of 鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux鈥 were utterly abysmal. To be frank, the story鈥攐r, everything else鈥攚asn鈥檛 even bad. It just wasn鈥檛 that good, either.

鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux鈥 is set in the aftermath of the first film, where Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) prepares for his murder trial following the on-air killing of Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) along with several others.

Fleck encounters Harleen 鈥淟ee鈥 Quinzel (Lady Gaga), who inspires him to seek freedom by any means necessary, even through music. I don鈥檛 think I need to delve any deeper into the plot, as that鈥檚 basically it. Fleck meets Lee, he goes to trial, and that鈥檚 the gist of it. It鈥檚 a very slow film broken up by a couple of scenes that are kind of cool to see play out in realtime.

鈥淛oker: Folie 脿 Deux鈥 is a most unnecessary thing, at the end of the day. I think we all could have slept soundly had this film not been made, and we鈥檒l continue to do so now that it has been. But, the missed opportunity to bring Phoenix鈥檚 Joker character into the Robert Pattinson-verse should be studied.
