WHITEWRIGHT, Texas (KTEN) — Texas Department of Transportation workers are changing up the intersection of US 69/State Highway 160 and State Highway 11 in Whitewright.

What had been a four-way stop now looks like a construction zone, dotted with traffic cones and construction equipment.

Work started Tuesday to rebuild the intersection with a traffic signal.

The reasoning behind the change is to let traffic run more smoothly.

"People don't know how a four-way stop works, and it's a very major road," said Whitewright motorist Alexis Kake. "I'm ready for it. I've been ready since they were saying that they were going to do it."

TxDOT workers hope to have the new stop light up and running in about a month.

In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to continue to follow the four-way stop rule.
