Clegg Industries, founded by John and Judy Clegg, has conquered yet another continent after a recent trip to the icy tundra of Antarctica. Down near the South Pole, Clegg and his team constructed three modules: a generator house, a galley kitchen and a shower/toilet room.
From North America to Africa to Europe, Clegg Industries has gone worldwide and has conducted business on almost each continent around the globe. Australia is the only frontier Clegg鈥檚 company has not conquered.
In the fall of 2023, the company set out on the Antarctica project, gathering materials and constructing the three modules. Once the modules were completed, the parts were flown across the country to California and then later delivered to Antarctica by boat.
鈥淚t took us five days to get to McMurdo, which is the largest station in Antarctica,鈥 Clegg said as the keynote speaker at the 足交视频 Chamber of Commerce鈥檚 annual banquet Thursday evening.
But before Clegg and his team set sail for the land of ice and snow, they had to undergo various health screenings and a tremendous vetting process. In fact, Clegg lost two of his pearly white teeth before the trip.
Clegg said that despite the teeth not bothering him, two loose teeth were pulled out before he could go on the trip. It took him four months to become qualified for the trip.
鈥淭hirty percent of all contractors ever get to go after the medical and dental screenings,鈥 Clegg said.
McMurdo is located approximately 1,000 miles from the South Pole. Antarctica is only open for travel in the summertime, which is from October to mid-February. During the summer, the station is home to roughly 850 people.
A ship comes into the port once a year with supplies. Occasionally, other supplies are brought to Antarctica via plane at a landing strip 10 miles away from MCMurdo.
鈥淚t was about minus-10 degrees to about 5 above while we were there. Some days the windchill was -20,鈥 Clegg said.
Clegg鈥檚 20-day stay in Antarctica makes 足交视频鈥檚 recent dusting of snow seem like child鈥檚 play. Those hot and humid 100-degree-plus summer days don鈥檛 seem as bad in comparison.
A journey to the South Pole from McMurdo would take about 60 days, Clegg said. While one might think of sleds pulled by dogs, most ground transportation is done by snowmobiles, plow-rigged four-wheelers and tractors. Clegg and his team made the journey by living in modules that were pulled by tractors.
These tractors act as trains and carry supplies, field shelters, people and fuel. In Antarctica, almost everything is powered by a special Antarctic blend of diesel fuel that keeps it from freezing.
鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing out there, it鈥檚 just barren land. It鈥檚 all cold and ice,鈥 Clegg said.
If there is one thing Antarctica has an abundance of, its ice and snow. To make water, residents and visitors to Antarctica have to melt snow to cook or take a shower. The three modules that Clegg Industries built along with the sleeper modules built by a company in New Zealand can house 10 people and run solely on generators.
鈥淥ur core business is making unusual things,鈥 Clegg said.
After building in multiple countries across various continents, Clegg Industries has remained a family business since it was first founded by over 50 years ago. Three generations of the Clegg family, including 10family members, are employed by the business.
