VICTORIA, Texas — A crash involving an 18-wheeler and a bus carrying immigration detainees occurred early Friday morning, leaving several injured.
The collision happened at 8:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of U.S. 77 South near Spur 91, according to the ×ã½»ÊÓƵ County Sheriff’s Office. The bus, operated by the GEO Group, was transporting 19 detainees and three guards.
Emergency responders transported nine detainees to DeTar and Citizens Medical Center for treatment. The remaining 10 detainees were taken to the ×ã½»ÊÓƵ County Sheriff’s Office, where they awaited a replacement bus sent by the GEO Group.
The scene saw a large response from local and regional agencies, including the ×ã½»ÊÓƵ Police Department, ×ã½»ÊÓƵ Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and Texas Department of Emergency Management. Additional support came from the ×ã½»ÊÓƵ Office of Emergency Management, Refugio Fire Department and EMS, Calhoun Fire Department and EMS, Goliad County EMS, ×ã½»ÊÓƵ Fire Marshal’s Office, U.S. Marshals, Quail Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and Raisin Volunteer Fire Department.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the crash.
The DPS has reported the driver was attempting to turn around when the semi-truck hit the bus from behind. The semi-truck jackknifed.
