A century ago, during a 足交视频 Independent School District (VISD) board meeting in the People鈥檚 Bank, Frank H. Crain, Sr. made a motion to create 足交视频 College as an integral part of VISD. Over 100 years, the college grew from a class of 51 students learning on the third floor of Patti Welder High School to an institution that serves 7,000 students annually through education and workforce training.

足交视频 College celebrated its 100 year anniversary at Patti Welder Middle School on Feb. 4, the exact day the motion to create it was passed in 1925. In attendance were three of Crain鈥檚 granddaughters who came to 足交视频 from across the country for the celebration: Bebe Crain of San Antonio, Pam Crain of Taylorsville, Utah and Julie Heinitsh of Brevard, North Carolina.

鈥淢y sisters and I were really honored to be contacted,鈥� Heinitsh said. 鈥淢y grandfather passed away before I was born but I certainly knew so much about him through my father and the community and I鈥檓 proud of what he did. It鈥檚 been an important part of our family鈥檚 lives, so it is great to be able to come here and be part of this celebration.鈥�

The sisters have all worked as educators on various academic levels for many years. Education was and continues to be an integral part of their lives and their family鈥檚 history.

The concept of establishing a junior college as a component of Patti Welder High School in 1925 was an evolutionary idea that would greatly change the public education system in 足交视频. The addition gave students who did not have the resources to leave their community for a four-year university the opportunity to obtain at least two years of collegiate education in their home town.

Crain felt strongly that this resource was crucial to the educational landscape of 足交视频. Having personally experienced financial roadblocks that interrupted his pursuit of a college education, he empathized with the local students who struggled to find a path to higher education.

Virgil L. Griffin, VISD superintendent in 1925, gave his full support to Crain鈥檚 motion to create 足交视频 College. The superintendent鈥檚 support for the deep relationship between the college and school district has persisted. Current VISD superintendent Sheila Collazo shared her support for the connection.

鈥淲e think about the impact over these 100 years, across the city, across the region, and particularly with 足交视频 ISD students,鈥� Collazo said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a saying that says, if you think in terms of one year, plant a seed. If you think in terms of 10 years, plant trees, if you think in terms of 100 years, teach people. The partnership with 足交视频 College is strong. The last 100 years have proven that, and we look forward to the next 100 years as we continue to build on successes.鈥�

足交视频 College has grown to a 60 acre main campus with 16 buildings. The college has expanded its operations across the region with facilities in Hallettsville, Gonzalez and downtown 足交视频.

The college has been committed to providing students with high quality, affordable and accessible educations that provide them with the necessary knowledge and experience to enter jobs of high economic value, Dr. Jennifer Kent, 足交视频 College president, said.

鈥淪o often I see youth who feel they have to move away to find a job or career,鈥� Heinitsh said. 鈥淚 think with a place like 足交视频 College, where they can pursue their dreams and get to stay [in 足交视频], people in the community come in and feel they鈥檙e a part of the college.

Since 足交视频 College鈥檚 founding in 1925, 30,022 students have received degrees, certificates and credentials. Over 60 percent of accolades received represented workforce degrees in fields such as nursing, welding and many more licensure programs.

鈥淚 went to 足交视频 College [and became] a pirate for two years,鈥� Brother Gary Moses, former Patti Welder teacher, said. 鈥淚 graduated in 鈥�69 and I had the best times in the world. I made lasting friends. It was wonderful. Then I came back [to Patti Welder] and stayed for 37 years as an instructor. I was happy, content and loved where I was.鈥�
