My friend Linda is passionate about anaqua (Ehretia anacua) trees. When she built her home, the contractor wanted to cut down a couple of anaqua trees that border her property. Linda would not allow it. To her, these seven trees are treasures. Linda says 鈥淭hey look like dancers to me.鈥�

Anacua trees are native to 足交视频. You can see fine acaqua trees in our Riverside Park. According to Wayne and Martha McAllister, anaqua trees range south of 足交视频 through the Rio Grande Valley to Mexico and north to Austin.

Anacua is a medium-sized tree that grows 20- to 50-feet tall with a trunk about two-feet in diameter and a spread of 30 feet. It has dense, dark green foliage that creates heavy shade. Its leaves are rough like sandpaper. Hence, Anaqua trees are called Sandpaper Tree or Knockaway.

While its leaves seem to get the most attention, the Anaqua tree trunk is unique. Its beige-colored bark is bumpy on a straight, often fluted trunk. The trunk on an old tree is unusual. The Wasowski鈥檚 describe 鈥渋t鈥檚 like several corky corded trunks all bound together鈥� with reddish flaking bark.

It blooms from late fall through winter and into spring depending on rain and climate. It may have more than one blooming period. The pure white, small and fragrant flowers appear at the tips of the branches. When it is in full bloom, it looks like the tree is covered in snow and honeybees.

Like live oaks, the anaqua is not a true evergreen. Some refer to it as a semi-evergreen. New leaves emerge every spring. Sometimes the new leaves will look chlorotic yellow, but they always turn green in their own time.

Spring ripening fruits are bright orange drupes about the size of hackberries. They are sweet and good for jams. These juicy berries are eaten by numerous birds and mammals who spread the seeds. Wouldn鈥檛 it be nice if you had an anaqua tree planted for you?

Anaqua seeds germinate from fresh seeds. However, germination rates are more consistent if the seeds are stratified. Gather seeds in late summer when the fruit is very ripe. Pulp may be removed or dried on seeds. One way to stratify the seeds is in moist sand for 30 days at 41 degrees. Store dried seeds in sealed, refrigerated containers.

If you plant an anaqua tree, it will need lots of water to get established. As it matures the tree becomes drought-tolerant. It grows well in sand, loam, clay and caliche as long as the soil drains well. It does not need to be fertilized. If it is over-watered or is in a poor drainage area, it will not survive.

Anaqua trees start out as good understory trees but eventually grow large enough to qualify as canopy trees. Be careful not to plant them in high traffic areas because the fleshy, fruits can be very messy.

Anaqua trees are very attractive, aromatic and showy. They need sun and are drought and disease tolerant. Sometimes anaqua trees are described as subtropical. They are the exclusive host for the Anacua Tortoise Beetle.

In their book Native Texas Plants, Sally and Andy Wasowski designed two different regional landscapes that included anaqua trees. One plan was labeled Corpus Christi. In this plan the selected plants were appropriate for 足交视频 and the Coastal Bend Prairies. All the plants were winter- and drought- hardy species that grow well in clay and caliche.

The Valley Plan includes lots of brush plants with white blooming anaqua, kidneywood and Mexican olive as well as colorful native plants and shrubs.

Since moving to 足交视频, my friend Linda has introduced me many new plants. The unique anaqua tree is probably the 鈥淐rowning Jewel鈥� because it tends to grow best in this area and is truly beautiful.
