For the ninth time, Weesatche 4 Warriors is honoring veterans with a community event that will not only raise money for veteran organizations, but also hand out gifts to them Saturday at the Weesatche Community Center.

The event, called 鈥淎 Day in The Country,鈥 will feature various activities, games, a silent auction and more with the aim of raising money to benefit local and regional first responders.

鈥淭his is the ninth year we鈥檙e doing this, and it鈥檚 our biggest fundraiser of the year and allows us to help veterans wherever it is needed,鈥 said Myra Heard, Weesatche 4 Warriors spokesperson. 鈥淲e鈥檝e used the money to provide donations to (the USS Lexington) in Corpus, and we鈥檝e even gone down to border and prepared lunches for border patrol agents.鈥

Heard encourages people to come out and enjoy a chuck wagon meal, live music and more.

The most notable activities include an armadillo race, and for the first time, a cornhole tournament, she said.

Although Weesatche is a small town, hundreds attend the event, Heard said.

鈥淲e鈥檒l have an antique car show that people always enjoy and face painting for the kids,鈥 she said.

For the veterans, first responders and active duty military, there will be a goodie bag of items for them as thanks for their service when they enter, Heard said. There will also be various veteran organizations and support services on hand that can assist them if they need it.

An example provided was the Habitat for Humanity of the Golden Crescent being on hand which can provide aid to veterans through select programs for home repairs, she said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just a good time for everyone,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 our way of showing our support for veterans.鈥

The event is being dedicated Glenn Nolan Diebel, 75, a Vietnam veteran who died in July. The event was previously dedicated in 2020 to Diebel鈥檚 father Roland Diebel, who served in World War II.
