James was 鈥淭he Real Deal,鈥 a cowboy with grit, grace and a smile that could light up any room. He was a humble man who wanted few possessions. Family was the only thing important to him. You knew him by his starched wrangler jeans and white shirt, dingy white cowboy hat and his constant whistle. He always loved his work and could build absolutely anything from saddles, boats, buildings, and anything else you could dream up. He loved to sit on a stool, play the guitar and sing for his family and friends. He loved to sing all the original country outlaw singers. After graduating from St Joseph High School, he started his career in the Army as a jumping horse trainer and doing leather work. He was a welder in the oilfield then he started Circle J Saddle Shop and Circle J Enterprises. He worked alongside his son Farrell at Rafter J Construction until his passing. Everybody that knew him loved him and even people he didn鈥檛 know always wanted to shake his hand. James treated everyone like family, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. James had a special way of seeing the world, and his eyes could tell stories words never could. The philosophy he lived by was 鈥淒o what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.鈥
