An exemplary feature of our government is dispersed power. At the federal level, we have three branches, each with specific responsibilities, beginning with Congress in Article I.
We elect multiple federal representatives and more at state and local levels. All pledge to support the Constitution, not one person.
Our president-elect has nominated a new FBI director, a position that, by law, is not even vacant. Texas鈥檚 two senators, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, have the responsibility to advise and consent to this nomination. Both have indicated their support for Kash Patel as the nation鈥檚 most powerful law enforcement officer.
Mr. Patel鈥檚 priority for the FBI, charged with protecting the US from terrorist attacks and other foreign and transnational criminal activity, will be to criminally or civilly prosecute 60+ 鈥渆nemies鈥 (his list is 鈥渘ot exhaustive鈥), individuals who do not support President-elect Trump but who have not been accused of any crime.
Regardless of party, surely none of us want an FBI whose priority will be to target anyone who dislikes the president, or any other arbitrary criteria that suits a president鈥檚 whims. This would be a very dangerous United States for us all.
