Students鈥 lives are often full of activities that consume the majority of their time. From classes to after-school programs to keeping active, students鈥 struggle to add to their busy schedules. A small group of local elementary schoolers break their schedules and manage to consistently give back to the community.
Keep 足交视频 Beautiful awarded the Hopkins Elementary Student Council with the first ever Youth Team Award at the non-profit鈥檚 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. The award was presented to the youth group who attended the most community cleanups and had the most enthusiasm in 2024.
鈥淭his was the first year we had a youth team award and they were the first ones to [receive it],鈥 Christy Youker, City of 足交视频 assistant director of environmental services, said. 鈥淭hey exemplify what Keep 足交视频 Beautiful is about and what the community is about.鈥
The Hopkins Elementary Student Council is composed of 16 fourth and fifth grade students who maintain an 80 and above grade level, maintain good attendance and consistently show exceptional conduct. The students develop leadership by organizing and participating in school activities and community service projects.
鈥淲e believe that by working together, we create positive change and foster a stronger connection between our students and the community,鈥 Tamara Tucker, Hopkins Elementary Student Council supervisor, said.
The students worked extremely hard at every clean-up they attended and are proud to be leaders in their school, Youker said. Being a member of Hopkins鈥 Student Council is an honor the students hold dearly.
The students put their full effort into their volunteer service. The energy they bring makes them stand out to the much older volunteers they interact with, Youker said. They work just as hard or harder than the community members around them.
鈥淩esidents respond to the young people out there working so hard,鈥 Youker said. 鈥淩esidents [appreciate] their enthusiasm in the neighborhood cleanups. At first, [residents are] like, 鈥楢re these kids going to be able to really help?鈥, and they get out there and they really pay attention to the rules and help greatly.鈥
The Hopkins Elementary Student Council plays an integral role in community service in 足交视频. The students were honored to light the Christmas tree in DeLeon Plaza this past December. They have done volunteer work for many non-profits and events across the community.
鈥淭he students have volunteered at: The Food Bank of The Golden Crescent, neighborhood cleanup events, [they] lead Gulf Bend鈥檚 Shine the Light Walk, distributed gifts at the Salvation Army Angel Tree, HEB鈥檚 Feast of Sharing and residential activities at local Nursing Home,鈥 Tucker said.
The student council has raised funds to host a variety of activities at Hopkins Elementary as well.
鈥淲e raise funds in order to host activities on our campus such as Trunk or Treat, Easter egg hunts for our littles, to create cancer chemo kits for kids fighting cancer or to buy the donuts for our 鈥楥OP TRAP鈥 at our yearly highly anticipated 鈥楰ids versus Cops鈥 kickball game,鈥 Tucker said.
