CUERO 鈥 Conner Kubesch gets a reminder of Cuero鈥檚 tradition in football every time he walks into the locker room.
Kubesch鈥檚 father, Wesley, played football at Cuero in the 1990s before going on to play at Rice.
鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty cool,鈥 Conner Kubesch said. 鈥淭hey have pictures of the past players in there, and I see his picture all the time. 鈥
Conner Kubesch has made his mark at Cuero in football and in the classroom.
Kubesch started at tight end and linebacker, and was recently named to the elite team of the Texas High School Coaches Association鈥檚 academic all-state football team.
The team recognizes senior athletes, trainers and managers who excel in GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT score.
Kubesch has a grade-point average 4.05, graded out a 101.25 on the 100-point scale and scored 1,430 on his SAT to become the only player in the area to be selected for the elite team.
鈥淚t means a lot,鈥 Kubesch said. 鈥淚 feel like I put in a lot of work while I was at school.鈥
Kubesch had to overcome some challenges during his senior year. He tore a medial collateral ligament in the season-opener against Columbus and didn鈥檛 return until Week 8 against Sinton.
鈥淭he rehab wasn鈥檛 super hard,鈥 Kubesch said. 鈥淚 just had to be on crutches a little bit and wear a boot. The part that was bad was watching my friends play.鈥
Kubesch had nine catches for 129 yards and five touchdowns, and made 27 tackles.
鈥淐onner is a team dude,鈥 Cuero head coach Jerod Fikac said. 鈥淲herever we asked him to play, he was willing to play. He鈥檚 obviously got a great background and he鈥檚 a great kid. He pushed his teammates and was a leader. He鈥檚 one of those kids that you hate to lose. He worked hard on the football field and in the classroom and that鈥檚 something he really takes pride in.鈥
Kubesch gives credit to his teachers, especially English teacher Denise McCarter, and parents for his academic success.
鈥淭hey pushed the importance of it on me,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey helped push me to do it. I try to complete as much work in school as possible. I try to use my time wisely.鈥
Kubesch, who is playing basketball, plans to attend Texas A&M in the fall and major in engineering.
His only regret is the Gobblers weren鈥檛 able to make a deeper run in the playoffs.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 where we wanted to be,鈥 Kubesch said. 鈥淏ut I think we鈥檒l be able to look back on it and be proud of what we did.鈥
